(b. Ankara 1941) Turkish pianist. She began piano lessons at the age of three, later studying the piano with Cortot and Kempff and composition with Boulanger. At 15 she graduated from the Paris Conservatoire with three premiers prix and embarked on an international career which has included appearances with most of the world’s leading orchestras and conductors. In 1993 she became the first pianist to record the complete works of Chopin. Her other complete recordings include the solo piano works of Brahms and Rachmaninoff, Liszt’s transcription of the Beethoven symphonies and the piano sonatas of Boulez. Known mainly for her interpretations of the great Romantic composers, she possesses and encyclopedic repertory and a formidable technique. In addition to the complete or near-complete, piano works of Beethoven, Schumann, Debussy, Ravel, Skryabin, Prokofiev and Stravinsky, Biret has performed all of the principal keyboard works of Bach, Schubert, Liszt and Bartok, the complete keyboard concertos of Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov and Prokofiev, most of the Mozart concertos, many contemporary works (she gave the première of Jean Françaix’s Piano Sonata in 1960) and reams of chamber music. Notable ensemble partners have included Wilhelm Kempff, Maurice Gendron and Yehudi Menuhin. Like many leading players Biret is an uneven artist, capable of rhythmically prosaic and totally opaque playing, but also of profoundly inspired interpretations.

She was a member of the jury at the Queen Elisabeth Competition, Brussels, 1978. Besides a wide classical repertory she plays music by Boucourechliev and other modern composers.

Als Cortot diese Künstlerin hörte, war er begeistert über die Unbeschwertheit und die Frische ihres Spiels: Vor ihm stand die sieben jährige Idil Biret; deren debut in Paris grosses Aufsehen erregt habe. Nur selten sind bei einem jungen Menschen derartige musikantische Gaben zu finden bei ihr.

Idil Biret wurde 1941 in Istanbul geboren. In ihrer heimat, am Bosphorus, nahm sie ihren ersten Klavierunterricht und machte binnen weniger Jahre derartige Fortschritte, dass sie von der türkische Staatsregierung sogleich ein Stipendium erhielt, durch das ihr die Ausbildung in Paris ermöglicht wurde. Nachdem sie ihr Studium mit grossem Erfolg beendet hatte, wurde sie dem berühmten Universalpianisten Wilhelm Kempff empfohlen, der sie mit den letzten Feinheiten des kunstvollen Klavierspiels vertraut machte.

Sodann bereiste Idil Biret die Welt: Sie feierte überall wahre Triumphe. In England, Frankreich, den USA und Kanada überzeugte sie ihre Zuhörer durchweg. Diese blutjunge Pianistin verfügt schon heute über eine verblüffende Technik, gepaart mit männlicher Kraft ihres Anschlags und höchster Musikalität. Es ist erstaunlich, mit welcher Verve sie die beiden technisch wie darstellerisch äusserst schwierigen Klavierkonzerte von Brahms vorträgt und mit welcher Feinfühligkeit sie eine Mozart-Sonate oder ein Werk Beethovens darbietet. Ihr Name wird bald in aller Munde sein, denn die grosse Zukunft hat für diese hochbegabte und ihren Vortrag meisterhaft beherrschende Pianistin schon begonnen.

Idil Biret, türkische Pianistin, Ankara 21.11.1941. Während ihres Studiums am Pariser Konservatorium wurde sie von Alfred Cortot und Nadia Boulanger unterrichtet, später von Wilhelm Kempff. 1953 debutierte sie mit Mozarts Konzert für zwei Klavier KV 365 - mit Kempff als Partner. Seither tritt sie weltweit mit namhaften Dirigenten (Leinsdorf, Mackerras, Keilberth, Pritchard, Kempe) und Kammermusikpartnern (Menuhin) auf. Als Jury-Mitglied war sie u.a. beim Van Cliburn, Olivier Messiaen und beim Busoni Wettbewerb tätig. Die über ein sehr weitgespanntes Repertoire verfügende Künstlerin nahm als erste Pianistin Liszts Transkriptionen der Beethoven-Sinfonien für die Schallplatte auf, ferner spielte sie alle Klavierwerke von Brahms und Chopin ein.

Le liens qui unissent la vie musicale turque et la France expliquent qu’une bourse d’étude au Conservatoire de Paris lui soit attribuée très tôt. Elle obtient trois premiers prix: de piano, d’accompagnement chez Nadia Boulanger et, en 1954, de musique de chambre avec Jacques Février. En 1953, à douze ans, elle interprète le Concerto pour deux pianos de Mozart avec Wilhelm Kempff. De 1959 a 1961, elle etudie avec Alfred Cortot. Au cours de sa carriere internationale, elle joue notamment avec Pierre Monteux, Herman Scherchen, et Yehudi Menuhin en 1973. D’une culture encyclopédique, elle étend son répertoire de Bach à la musique contemporaine, en privilégiant les oeuvres monumentales et contrapuntiques. Pianiste turque née à Ankara le 21 novembre 1941. Des l’âge de deux ans et demi, elle manifeste des dons exceptionelles pour la musique. Qulques annees plus tard, elle beneficie d’une loi spéciale votée en son nom par l’Assemblée nationale turque pour venir travailler à Paris. Elle acheve ses etudes au Conservatoire de Paris obtenant trios premiers prix dans les classes de piano (jean Doyen), d’accompagnement (Nadia Boulanger) et de musique de chambre (Jacques Février). A l’âge de onze ans, elle joue à Paris le Concerto pour deux pianos de Mozart avec Wilhelm Kempff don’t elle reçoit de précieux conseils ainsi que d’Alfred Cortot. A partir de 1957, elle entame une carrière internationale en soliste et sous la direction des plus grande chefs. En 1973, au Festival d’Istanbul, elle joue les Sonates pour violon et piano de Beethoven avec Yehudi Menuhin. En 1969 et 1971 elle est membre de jury du concours de piano Olivier Messiaen à Royan, en 1978 du concours Reine Elisabeth de Belgique. Son répertorie très vaste englobe la musique classique, romantique et contemporaine (Webern, Bartok, Stravinski, Boulez, Boucourechliev). Elle présente volontiers des oeuvres rarement jouées comme la Symphonie fantastique de Berlioz, transcrite par Liszt, et intégrale de symphonies de Beethoven, également transcrites par Liszt, don’t elle réalise le premier enregistrement mondial en 1986 et qu’elle présente la meme année en concert à Montpellier. Elle y obtint rapidement un premier prix de piano dans la classe de Jean Doyen, un premier prix de musique de chamber dans celle de Jacques Février et un autre premier prix d’accompagnement avec Nadia Boulanger. Mais là ne s’arrêtaient pas ses performances car, à onze ans, elle donna a Paris le Concerto pour deux pianos (Mozart) avec Wilhelm Kempff; elle souleva l’enthousiasme des mélomanes dans les passages de virtuosité. Des 1957, Idil Biret entreprit une carriere internationale de soliste et se produisit avec le plus grands orchestras. Au festival d’Istanbul de 1973, elle interpréta avec Yehudi Menuhin les Sonates pour violon et piano (Beethoven). Son répertoire est très éclectique: musique classique, romantique et contemporaine (Stravinski, Bartok, Webern etc.). Born in Ankara, Biret’s exceptional gifts were apparent as a child. So, training at the piano started when she was only three. She was such a prodigiously talented pupil that she graduated from the Paris Conservatory at the age of fifteen with three first prizes. She studied piano with Alfred Cortot and Wilhelm Kempff and composition with Nadia Boulanger. At eleven she performed Mozart’s concerto for two pianos with Wilhelm Kempff in Paris. Since the age of sixteen she has given concerts throughout the world, performing with major orchestras under the direction of conductor such as Monteux, Scherchen, Leinsdorf, Boult, Kempe, Sargent, Rozhdestvensky, Keilberth, Fruhbeck de Burgos, Pritchard, Groves, Mackerras, Iwaki.

Idil Biret’ first United States appearance took place at the age of twenty one when she played Rachmaninoff’s piano concerto no.3 in a series of concerts with the Boston Symphony orchestra under the direction of Eric Leinsdorf. The following year she performed the same work with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Pierre Monteux. Biret made her first tour of the Soviet Union upon the invitation of Emil Gilels and over the years she gave more than eighty concerts in the USSR. She returned in 1984 for concerts with the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1980 and 1984 Biret toured Australia giving sixty concerts, fourteen of them at the Sydney Opera House. In 1990 she toured widely in Japan giving orchestral and solo concerts in Tokyo, Osaka and major cities. Toshiba/EMI made CD release of her recordings (Beethoven Symphonies’ transcriptions by Liszt) in Japan in conjunction with these appearances.

She has participated in the festivals of Montreal, Persepolis, Royan, La Rochelle, Athens, Berlin, Gstaad and the Istanbul festival where she performed Beethoven Sonatas with Yehudi Menuhin. She was also invited to perform at the 85th birthday celebration of Wilhelm Backhaus and the 90th birthday celebration of Wilhelm Kempff. Idil Biret has been a member of juries of many international competitions including the Queen Elisabeth Competition (Belgium), the Van Cliburn Competition (USA), and the Busoni Competition (Italy).

In 1986 Biret made the world premiere recording of the complete set of Beethoven’s nine symphonies piano transcriptions by Liszt for EMI/HMV. In the same year she performed the nine symphonies in a series in a series of four concerts at the Montpellier Festival in France. She received glowing reviews in newspapers and magazines after the release of the recordings. Gramophone (London): “This is a remarkable achievement”. Fono Forum (Munich): “With the recent release of the Beethoven/Liszt Symphonies international recognition should be secure for her”. Arts magazine (Brussels): Idil Biret has just put her signature to an impressive achievement. Bravo!”.

During 1990-1992 Biret completed a project for Naxos to record 30 CDs consisting of the works of Brahms, Rachmaninoff and the complete piano works of Chopin. Most recently she has also made the piano transcriptions of Brahms symphonies. Her playing is distinguished by its exceptional clarity, an almost flawless technique and unerring ability to impart the right colour and nuance to a phrase and balancing perfect discipline with an emotional quality and unequalled poetry.

Biret’s world premieres include Adnan Saygun’s Concerto for Piano no.1 and Preludes. Jean Francaix’s Sonata for Piano and A. Boucourechliev’s Archipel IV. She has received the following awards: Lily Boulanger Memorial Fund, Boston (1954, 1964); Harriet Cohen / Dinu Lipatti Gold Medal, London (1959); Polish Artistic Merit (1974); Chevalier de l’Ordre National de Merite, France (1976).
